Fiji, Our Land and People
Fiji is a tropical paradise with a maritime climate that attracts visitors from all over the world. The islands are occasionally affected by tropical cyclones between November and April, while heavy downpours are prevalent during this period. Fiji enjoys warm temperatures throughout the year, with cooler months between May and October.
The total land area of Fiji is 18,333 square kilometers, with Viti Levu and Vanua Levu accounting for 87% of the total landmass. The country consists of two main islands and several groups of smaller islands, such as Taveuni, Kadavu, Rabi, Vatulele, Beqa, Qamea, Rotuma, Lau, Moala, Lomaiviti, Mamanuca, and Yasawa.
Fiji’s population is predominantly Melanesian, with early sea rovers resulting in a mixture of racial types and cultures, including Melanesian, Polynesian, Indian, Chinese, and other nationalities, making Fiji a unique melting pot of cultures.
Indigenous Fijians and Rotumans own 88% of the land, while the State holds 4%, and private freeholds account for about 8%. The capital city, Suva, is located on the southeastern end of Viti Levu, while Lautoka is in the west.
Fiji’s unique culture is reflected in its love of nature, fear, imagination, happiness, and laughter. The people of Fiji are known for their warmth, hospitality, and love of life. Visitors to Fiji can expect a rich cultural experience that embraces the country’s diverse heritage.
It’s worth noting that Rotuma, an island group located about 600km north of Fiji, was never conquered and ceded by its chiefs to the British to quell internal factional fighting in the 1880s. Today, Rotuma is administered from Suva, and its people have since intermarried with Fijians, creating a shared history and culture.
